When the rest of the games world was rushing to capitalise on the new 3D technology, some years ago, Pyro studio was beavering away at a 2D isometric view title that would set a new standard of graphics quality for the rest of them to only dream about.
Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines was the first of three titles in the Commandos series and it was nothing short of a work of gaming genius. It was certainly not everyone's cup of tea. Each level of the torturous strategy could take hours to complete, but for those of us who clicked with it, Commandos: Behind Enemy Lines was an extraordinary game. I, for one, became totally immersed in it, from level one to its wrought conclusion.
Commandos 2: Men of Courage has come and gone and it was a chip of the old block. Once again, the strategy taxed even the best of us, but Pyro romped home with another feast of truly excellent graphics and deeply emersive gameplay.
Now we have Commandos 3: Destination Berlin later this month. The action starts with the Normandy landings and continues, level by level, to Berlin and the heart of the 3rd Reich.
The game features a new interior engine that enables you to rotate the detailed environments and zoom in and out. Prepare your Commandos as enemy bombing raids lay waste to environments, requiring you to change your tactics and approach.
The structure of the game has been completely revamped. Commandos 3: Destination Berlin features more detailed, smaller maps providing more action orientated missions that form part of an overall campaign. A strong narrative drives the story via cinematic briefing screens. The gameplay will also incorporate completely new gaming situations including ambushes, assaults, level bosses as well as classic Commandos gameplay. Commandos 3: Destination Berlin will be more accessible than previous games in the series
Commandos 3 has three main campaigns: Stalingrad, Central Europe and Normandy. Each of the campaigns encompasses many different tactical situations and they can be played in any order. The game will feature scenarios unseen in previous Commandos games taking you to the Stalingrad battlefields of the Eastern Front, the heart of the Reich in the Gestapo headquarters in Berlin and the D-Day assault at Omaha Beach. For the first time ever in the series, there will be a deathmatch multiplayer mode for up to eight players where you can use your tactical skills to play online or across LAN.
Release date: 24/10/2003.
